History of Budva

Budva is the “touristic capital” of Montenegro. It unites the two sides of Montenegrian life: the modern dynamic aspect and the ancient spirit that can leave no one indifferent.

Budva is one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic coast, with a history of about 2500 years. The first mention of a settlement here goes back to the 5th century B.C. when it was called Butou, and was believed to be founded by the son of the Phoenician king who ran here with his wife. For many centuries the settlement was placed just within the walls of the Old Town. Today the Old town remains on a peninsula and has all the attributes of an old Mediterranean city, with narrow streets, analogous buildings with red tiled roofs, numerous historical sights and monuments.

It is a real wonder that attracts tourists from all over the world throughout the year.

BUDVA is the main tourist center of Montenegro.

The new city was developed around the peninsula on where the old town stands (Stari Grad), surrounded by medieval walls, towers and defensive fortifications. You can go into the city center by one of the five entrance gates, where you find yourself in a maze of streets, alleys and small squares.

During the Venetian rule the fortifications were strengthened and the city took on the urban layout that characterizes it today. On the outskirts of the city the lions of San Marco are still visible and bear witness to the Venetian domination.

Among the most important monuments to be remembered are: the St Ivan’s Churches, which house flat panel paintings of Venetian artists from the fifteenth and seventeenth century, the St Sava’s Church, the Holy Mother of God’s Church and the Holy Trinity’s Church.

During the summer season, the Budva Riviera is very busy and there are many cultural events and shows, among which the most important is the Budva city theater Festival

The most beautiful beach is the 2 km long Becici beach.

In front of the city lies the island of San Nicola, surrounded by crystal clear sea, lively day and night and where you can find the remains of the convent and the church
